The racer got the name "Testa Rossa" from the red-painted cam covers over what at the time was a very powerful V-12 engine with 300 HP. The unusual body form was spectacular, with sharply drawn in front fenders which became known as pontoon fenders. These gave the Testa Rossa its unmistakable look. At the time it was one of the classiest and most successful racing cars and Ferrari’s flagship for long-distance aces. The victory in the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1958 with the drivers Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill went down in history.
The lightweight aluminum body was designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti.
